The Late Julius Kambarage Nyerere, popularly known as Mwalimu, a Swahili word for "teacher", was the founding father of the United Republic of Tanzania and a pioneer of African nationalism and pan-Africanism. He played a pivotal role in the anti-colonial and anti-apartheid struggles in southern Africa. He also played a key role in the establishment of the Organization of African Unity - the current African Union (AU), the East African Community (EAC) and the Frontline States - currently the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
Mwalimu led the South Commission that underlined the significance of South-South Cooperation and resulted in the establishment of the South Centre. He, ruled peacefully, retired voluntarily and oversaw a peaceful transfer of state authority to his successors. He was an outstanding statesman, a peace mediator, a philosopher, author, poet and a champion of social justice.
In honoring his contributions and great sacrifices to the weak and oppressed around the globe, the Permanent Mission of the United Republic of Tanzania to the United Nations, is organizing a commemoration of Mwalimu Nyerere Day @ the United Nations on 14 October 2013.
The commemorative event will be of inaugural nature consisting of presentations from scholars as well as prominent personalities who knew Mwalimu and/or were inspired by his work. It will also coincide with the launch of a book entitled, "Julius Nyerere: Africa's Titan on a Global Stage" co-edited by Prof. Ali A. Mazrui of Binghamton University, New York and Prof. Lindah L. Mhando, a Tanzanian Professor at the Duke University of North Carolina.
