Two journalism training schools have qualified to use the new competence based curriculum prepared by the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) in collaboration with the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE).
A3 Institute of Professional Studies of Dar es Salaam and the Arusha Journalism Training College have met all the requirements of the new curriculum designed for three levels of National Technical Awards (NTA) – basic certificate, advanced certificate and Diploma, the Executive Secretary of MCT, Kajubi Mukajanga said.
He told a packed press conference at the Council’s offices on 20th, September, 2013 that the decision to permit the two institutes to use curriculum was reached following inspection of several journalism training institutes conducted jointly with NACTE to determine the compliance of the requisite conditions for the use of new curriculum.
He said five other training institutes been given up to December, this year to meet the required conditions of the new curriculum.
They are Dar es Salaam School of Journalism, Time School of Journalism and Royal College all of Dar es Salaam.
Others are Institute of Social and Media studies of Arusha and Zanzibar Journalism and Mass Media College of Zanzibar.
Mukajanga, said these will be inspected early next year to determine their status.
The Council revoked its provisional permission for use of the new curriculum it had granted to the City Media College of Arusha after it had failed to meet the required conditions.
He said it was established that the status of the college had regressed compared to an earlier inspection.
The requisite requirements for using the competence based curriculum, he explained, include teaching and learning materials, professional capacity of tutors, structural facilities and management and administrative capacity for running a training institute.
Mukajanga also said that the Council provides training for tutors on the application of the new curriculum and disclosed that training for another batch of tutors will be conducted soon.
Responding to questions, the MCT chief warned that gone are the days of mediocrity in running of journalism schools.
“If you do not have the required capacity, don’t invest in journalism training… invest in something else”, he added.
